Invicta Dynamos are hoping to build on their solid start to the league campaign when they face Streatham Redhawks in a double-header this weekend.
The Mos have picked up five points from their opening two games in NIHL South Division 1 and this weekend they could make a real statement. Karl Lennon’s side head to Streatham on Saturday before facing the same opponents in Gillingham on Sunday.
Last Saturday’s league game at Solent Devils was postponed because of issues with the ice rink in Gosport and Lennon’s side lost 5-3 at home to Slough Jets on Sunday in the Challenge Cup.
Looking ahead to their weekend challenge, Lennon said: “When you have these double-headers, they normally provide some sort of drama.
“We had a really good result against them away from home in our first weekend (narrowly losing in the Challenge Cup).
“We were not up to match speed then and were missing a couple of bodies. That will be a different scenario coming into this weekend, and we're also playing for league and cup points.
“It’s a big weekend on the calendar for us. If we can have a good one, we've already started well. It would be a significant situation for us to exploit.”
Streatham have had a mixed start, losing to Chelmsford last Sunday.
Lennon expects a reaction from them, saying: “They would be very disappointed about that and we'll probably brunt the wrath of that when we show up there on Saturday.
“But it’s what we do for ourselves that is the most important thing.
“We've got confidence. We believe in this group. We're doing good. We're playing against good teams and we're getting strong results, even if we're not on the right side of them at the moment that luck will change. We just have to be dialled in all weekend.”
With only one game last weekend, it did at least give some players extra time to recover from knocks.
He said: “We were super disappointed not to have the Saturday fixture, because we had the momentum from the previous weekend.
“We’re feeling really confident in how we're playing at the moment but we had a couple of guys that are carrying knocks, and that probably helps them. One game is a bit more forgiving than two.
“I think rest seems to be the best remedy for a couple of them at the moment.
“We’ve missed Dan Scott for his working commitments the last few weeks, but he'll be back in October, which will be a big addition for us and we're excited about having him around.”
The Solent game was postponed on Saturday morning as there had been problems with the ice pad and the surface wasn’t safe for hockey.
Fans did at least get to see an exciting game on the Sunday - one where he felt they were let down by the officials.
The Mos came from behind to lead 3-2 in the third period with Mads Thune scoring either side of a Danny Gatenby effort.
Lennon was frustrated by some "questionable icing calls” and said: “We were 3-2 up and thinking, ‘Here we go, this is going to be a really, really good finish’.
“They scored a nothing sort of goal from a bit of a rebound, from what I remember, and I felt like the officials were letting us down a little bit.”
Andy Smith picked up a penalty for tripping, which Lennon had no issue with and the Mos killed it off, but then almost immediately after the referee called another two-minute penalty on Danny Gatenby.
“It was very, very soft and illogical,” said the coach. “He called a holding penalty on a body collision, so they didn't even call the right penalty, which we were super irritated by and they scored from the resulting power play.
“The net presence of one of their forwards was also aggressive, bordering on a disallowed goal. They did discuss it, but didn't change their decision.”
With the Jets 4-3 up the Mos pulled their netminder in an attempt to get back level but the visitors scored in the empty net to seal the win.
Lennon said: “I said to the guys afterwards, it's the way it is in a season. You get questionable ones favourable to you, and then questionable ones that are not. You just kind of have to accept it for what it is.
“It just was super irritating, because we were 3-3, five minutes or so left to play, looking good and the team in the ascendancy.
“It says everything when their netminder comes up to you afterwards and tells you you've been robbed and then the official acknowledged the soft call he'd made. It’s great to say afterwards, but why was that not made in the game?
“I'm not one of those coaches to scream and shout at an official, I don't really try to do that, but that was frustrating.
“The only saving grace is that it was in the Challenge Cup, so it's isolated to one competition, and not impacted our league hopes.”
