The EFL meet to discuss alternative proposals of how to decide the outcome of the League 1 season if the 2019/20 campaign is curtailed

The Football League meet today to discuss alternative proposals for how to end League 1.

The EFL have their own preferred framework that includes promotion, relegation and the play-offs, with positions decided on points per game average (PPG) if the season is curtailed.

Clubs had until Tuesday afternoon to lodge alternative ways of ending the current campaign. Several are on the table, including a complex PPG method that allows for a "margin of error", taking into account a team's performance over previous seasons.

Tranmere Rovers chairman Mark Palios is hoping his idea will get the nod, one which would see them avoid relegation. It would leave the Gills 11th and adrift of any potential play-off campaign.

Peterborough United have been pushing for the season to resume, as finishing it early on the EFL's current proposals would mean them missing out on the play-offs. Under Tranmere's alternative framework they would be able to contest the play-offs and are understandably supporting it.

Gills boss Steve Evans, exasperated at the time it’s taken to make a decision on the season, had a proposal of his own, saying, tongue in cheek: “I am sure if I got to write a plan then it would probably be Coventry (who currently lead League 1) and Rotherham (in second) and Gillingham that get promoted because the team in 11th has two is in its name!

“When you read these plans, not just the Tranmere plan, there is always going to be a case of self interest.

“Myself and the chairman were discussing the Tranmere proposal, we have looked at them all, but with every proposal that comes across his desk he can’t help but know who has sent it.”

The EFL have previously ruled out a suggestion of extending the play-offs to include places from third to 10th - which would have included the Gills on a PPG finish. It's one of Peterborough's suggestions and they have put the proposal forward again for consideration.

Gills chairman Paul Scally thinks it’s impossible to finish the regular season now and has said it’s unaffordable too.

EFL clubs need to give their backing to a new framework that could be used to end the season early, as it means a change of the rules to which they agreed to at the start of the campaign. That's what the EFL are now finalising.

Once that’s agreed, then the League 1 clubs can finally get on with voting about whether they want it ended or not. That vote will take place some time next week. Monday (June 8th) was the expected date but that's already been pushed back to Tuesday and clubs may have the rest of that week to make up their minds.

Given the finances and the fact that time is now not on their side, it seems likely that the Gills won’t play another game of the 2019/20 campaign.

But, as this long drawn out affair has proved, who knows what is around the corner next?
