Gillingham manager Steve Evans would sign letter sent to the FA which asks them to reverse decision to expunge the season

Gillingham manager Steve Evans says he would add his name to the letter which calls on the FA to reverse their decision to scrap the non-league season.

The Football Association announced last week that football below the National League, between steps three and seven, would be declared null and void and there would be no promotion or relegation.

Over 100 clubs have signed an open letter criticising the FA’s decision and asking them to reconsider. The decision to expunge the season still needs official ratification from the FA Council.

There has yet to be a decision made about the Football League season, although at present it is suspended indefinitely. The National League went the same way on Tuesday.

Evans feels for the many non-league sides who have had their hopes dashed.

“It is shocking,” he said. “Steps three to seven have been told ‘right your season is over, it didn’t count, everything is expunged.’

“I bet every one of those clubs is looking forward to getting a cheque back for all of those bookings and suspensions they have had, but that won’t happen!

“I think the decision is wrong. There is a petition out there now from a non-league club in the north east and if it comes across my door I will sign it for them.

“I am sure those clubs would like to know who made this decision and I have every sympathy with them.

“If the decision is made by the clubs and it is a majority rule, that is what it is, but if it is made by three or four people for administrative purposes it is a shambles.

“Almost 100% of the managers and the coaching staff and those on the committees will be volunteers. People are working 50-60 hours a week and they jump in their car, straight to their local club.

“It is an absolute disgrace and I can see some of the volunteers of these clubs giving up because of it, thinking is it worth it anymore?”

Evans started his own management career in non-league, with teams such as Holbeach United, Stamford, Boston United and Crawley.

He knows just how big the decision made is for these teams.

Isthmian League side Herne Bay have signed the letter, along with Southern Counties East pair Beckenham Town and Corinthian.

Herne Bay were chasing a play-off place and they have been vocal in their disappointment. Chairman Stuart Fitchie signed the letter after tweeting: "In the week where the UK Gov has made efforts to support the people it governs, the FA has basically stuck two fingers up at its clubs.

"No care, consideration, empathy or offering. Just a generic email. Thanks."

The Beckenham chairman has also expressed his frustration over a lack of communication before a decision was made.

Gills boss Evans continued: “It is terrible. If you have worked really hard, like Beckenham Town, who are top of that league. Why should people take away those last eight months.

“Those administrators have no right to take it away. Let the clubs vote.”

Maidstone United are, however, hoping the season is put to an end so they can plan financially for a new one.

Stones co-owner Oliver Ash said "anybody who thinks [the season] should be revived hasn’t got a sufficient dose of reality."
