Referee Kevin Johnson back in charge of a Gillingham game just weeks after controversy in feisty clash with AFC Wimbledon

Kevin Johnson is set to referee Gillingham’s game this weekend just weeks after making a number of controversial decisions against them.

The Weston-super-mare official angered Gills’ management and fans alike after twice denying them seemingly clear-cut penalties in the recent game at AFC Wimbledon before sending off midfielder Ben Pringle near the end of the game for dissent.

Boss Steve Evans showed his anger at the end of the match but chose to keep much of his feelings to himself when asked about it in the post-match press conference, rather than risk being slapped with an FA fine.

Gillingham felt they should have penalties when both Brandon Hanlan and Olly Lee were fouled inside the box during separate incidents.

Pringle lost his cool when the match officials ruled for a goal-kick rather than a corner after the ball had gone out off a Wimbledon player with the Gills pushing for an equaliser.

Wimbledon fans were singing 'the referee is a Womble' towards the end of the game.

Less than two months later and the official will be overseeing the match against Peterborough United this Saturday.

When asked about the referee’s appointment, Evans said: “I don’t wish to make any comment on the referee.”

He added: “Wimbledon was a very interesting day. We hope this isn’t as interesting.”
