Former Ipswich Town striker Freddie Sears leaves Chatham Town along with fellow forward John Ufuah

Striker Freddie Sears’ time at Chatham Town is over after the popular frontman admitted he was unable to commit to another season.

Work commitments mean the former Ipswich Town striker - now 35 - will be moving on after one successful season with the Chats.

Sears was last year’s big summer recruit, and he lived up to the billing with plenty of goals, although the season didn’t turn out as planned as Chatham were unable to mount a promotion campaign.

He scored the last of his goals for Chatham in a 2-2 draw at Dulwich Hamlet on the final game of their Isthmian Premier Division campaign, taking his tally to 24.

His season included hat-tricks against Cray Wanderers and Wingate & Finchley.

Sears posted a goodbye message to fans on social media.

He wrote: “Just want to say a massive thank you to all the staff, players and fans for all your support this season.

“I really have loved my time at the club and your support home and away has been great - never did I expect to meet so many fans and it's been great meeting you all.

“I'm gutted we couldn't achieve what we all wanted from the start of the season.

“Unfortunately, due to work commitments, I won't be returning next season.

“I wish the club, Kev (Hake, the manager) and Tim (Moffatt, head coach) all the best and really hope you guys can have a great season next year.

“ I will definitely be back at the Bauvill.”

Fellow forward John Ufuah has also announce he is leaving the club, having also scored in that final game of the season, finishing with double figures for goals.

He said: “Just want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved with the club. Really enjoyed my time - excited for the next chapter.”
