Gillingham felt like it was two points dropped against high-flying Charlton on Saturday.

The Addicks had won their previous six in League 1 but needed a late goal from Chuks Aneke to rescue a point against the Gills, who took the lead through Jordan Graham’s second half penalty.

There were other chances too for the Gills and assistant boss Paul Raynor was disappointed that they weren’t celebrating three points at the end of the game.

He said: “It was an extremely good performance and the only downside is that we only came away with the one point and that is disappointing.

“I thought we had a fantastic shape about us, we nullified the real threats that Charlton have, they have some fantastic attacking players, both starting and coming off the bench but we kept it down to a minimum with problems they caused us and on chances created we should be talking about a clear victory for us but unfortunately we weren’t ruthless enough and it wasn’t to be.

“Reflecting on the game it was two points dropped and we are disappointed. We expect and want to win every game.

“It was a good performance but it is about taking chances. Vadaine Oliver, we should be talking about a hat-trick really, in terms of chances he had but he has been brilliant for us. He was disappointed that he didn’t take one of them but he will bounce back and score more goals for us.

“I thought we were a constant threat all over the pitch, big John (Akinde) coming on and being a real power house and Vadaine winning his flick ons, the two wide boys coming in, we looked really good but we looked solid at the back as well.”

Gillingham were disappointed with the 83rd minute goal they conceded, Raynor commenting: “We weren’t close enough to get the block in. He had too much time in the box and so we are a bit disappointed with that.

“We will have a good look at it on the video and we will try and give the guys some pointers on how we might be able to stop it next time out. But there are loads of positives and we will kick on to Tuesday now (at home to AFC Wimbledon).”

Gillingham scored their goal from the penalty spot, after a trip on John Akinde, but had earlier conceded one when Ryan Jackson was adjudged to have fouled Omar Bogle. Jack Bonham saved for the Gills and Raynor felt both were soft.

He said: “There was a hand on Omar’s back but whether it was enough to push him over I don’t know, it was slightly dubious, and they will feel aggrieved.

“Obviously Chris Gunter doesn’t mean to intentionally clip John Akinde either, he has gone beyond him and caught his heel. It could have been a tale of two penalties but it was more about chances that we didn’t take and we didn’t take the three points that we probably should have.”
