Gillingham goalkeeper Jack Bonham will miss games against Sunderland and Crewe

Jack Bonham has been ruled out of the weekend match with Sunderland but the Gills have signed a replacement.

Bonham suffered a bad landing in the first half of Gills' match with Ipswich Town and fears are he suffered concussion, which means he has to sit it out for a week as a precaution, which also rules him out of the midweek trip to Crewe.

QPR goalkeeper Joe Lumley, 25, has signed on a short term loan deal as cover.

Lumley has made 74 league appearances for the Rs and has had loan spells at Accrington, Morecambe, Stevenage Bristol Rovers and Blackpool in the last few years.

Gills boss Steve Evans said: "I have watched him play many times. He is an excellent goalkeeper.

"I would like to thank all at QPR and in particular my good friend Mark Warburton for sanctioning the emergency loan."

Explaining the situation with Bonham, Evans said: "Jack had two problems at Portman Road, he had a little ankle knock very early and the challenge when he came and toppled over and landed on his back.

"He was feeling pain in his neck and his head, the medical team felt he had suffered a very mild concussion and anybody knows in today’s world that if you have had concussion under EFL rules they are they are automatically out for seven days. We have to respect that because none of us really knows what happens inside that brain of ours. It is a medical decision."

He will be a miss, with Evans adding: "Jack has been absolutely stunning for us and I can only give him huge plaudits."

Lumley came in to train on Thursday and agreed terms on Friday.

Teenage keeper Joe Walsh came off the bench for his league debut at Ipswich but Evans doesn't want to put him under pressure so early on in his acreer, saying: "Joe Walsh will play a lot of games for this football club and higher than we play now, he is a top class.

"Had we won three of the last four then no problem, he would start, but we can't put that pressure on that young man. As much as it could make him, it could sink him."
