Gillingham's next opponents Bristol Rovers are being linked with Joey Barton as their next permanent manager

Gillingham take on Bristol Rovers this Saturday - a team looking for their third manager of the season.

Head of recruitment Tommy Widdrington is in temporary charge following the sacking of Paul Tisdale. He lasted just three months in the job after replacing Ben Garner. The caretaker boss led Rovers to a 3-1 midweek win over promotion chasing Portsmouth.

Former Fleetwood boss Joey Barton is the bookies’ favourite to take the job permanently but the midweek display showed whoever is in charge has a decent side at their disposal.

Evans said: “I know the man who is acting there, Tommy. He is a good football man, a knowledgeable man but if the reports are right we might be seeing Joey Barton here on Saturday.

“If it is Tommy, Joey, Billy or Peter, it doesn’t matter, their players will be here and they are good players.”

Former Gills striker Brandon Hanlan was returned to the starting XI by Widdrington but captain Max Ehmer - another former Priestfield player - was out injured.

Evans added: “Max Ehmer and Brandon Hanlan left here and went there for lots of wages and lots of money, and that demonstrates what they are about as a football club.”

The Gills boss will be hoping his own team cut out the mistakes that led to their undoing against Peterborough.

He said: “We made some mistakes but we won’t be too harsh on the players. We weren’t praising them too much after Charlton.

“Bonham knows he made a mistake. Cundy knows he made two mistakes, Tucker does as well. If we make those mistakes again against Bristol Rovers then we will be punished again.

“There is no point me ranting at them. We are here to work with the players, develop and support them and we will be ready for Bristol Rovers.

“They are a good side, underperforming at the moment, but they will be a test for us.”

Saturday’s behind closed doors match kicks off at 1pm.
