Gillingham fans are waiting in anticipation for who manager Gareth Ainsworth wants to keep on for a fresh challenge in League 2.

Goalkeeper Glenn Morris and midfielder Robbie McKenzie have already agreed new deals, but there are plenty more players out of contract.

Managing director Joe Comper said last week that Morris and McKenzie are “great players and the sort of characters needed to build something special.”

He added that “we have a few more conversations taking place” before they could announce their retained list and that it might take a few days.

It’s understood the likes of Jayden Clarke - top scorer this season - and Max Clark are among the players with expiring contracts.

Ainsworth may also look to put some players on the transfer list as he looks to trim the squad and make way for a handful of new arrivals.

One player the club has already confirmed leaving is Max Ehmer, ending his time at the club with 439 games under his belt - making him number six on the all-time list for Gillingham appearances.

He left with a parting message which he shared with fans on social media on Saturday, writing: “The time has come, just want to say thank you to every Gills fan, all the staff and players that have helped along the way.

“I’ve loved every minute and I’m sure I’ll be back soon one way or another to see everyone again.”

Bradley Dack’s also been on social media - reiterating his desire to stay on.

Dack scored a winning goal against MK Dons and looked to be enjoying his football again late in the season after a frustrating campaign on his return ot the Gills.

He said: “Another season ticked off. Where do I start.. to sign back for Gills after 8 years away was amazing, the season didn’t go as I or us a team planned but I know how we finished the season was what we are all about and I’m sure that will roll into next year.

“I fully believe we can achieve something special together, thanks for all your support guys it means the world 💙💙 hopefully see you all next season.”

Accrington, Barrow, Cheltenham, Doncaster, Fleetwood, Grimsby, Harrogate, MK Dons, Swindon Town and Tranmere have all already announced their retained list so far.
