Gillingham captain Stuart O’Keefe will be given every chance to play a part this weekend.
Midfielder O’Keefe made the trip to Sunderland on Saturday and received injections to try and get him fit for the match at the Stadium of Light. He couldn’t play, despite their efforts, and that led to Josh Chambers making his first start.
O’Keefe wasn’t involved in the early part of the week for training but there are hopes he could get back in action to make the home game against Wycombe Wanderers this Saturday.
“He wasn’t quite ready for the (Sunderland) game,” said Gillingham manager Neil Harris.
“We are hopeful that he will be closer for this one, if we can get him on the grass this week then we will try and manage him to the end of the season.”
Gillingham will also be hoping fellow midfielder Dan Phillips and the versatile Robbie McKenzie can return after muscle strains have kept them out. Both are getting closer to first team action.
“Ben Reeves getting 25 minutes was great,” said Harris, after being able to reintroduce him at the weekend.
“Maybe we could have given him slightly longer but I thought Josh Chambers did really well in that midfield position so we didn’t feel the need to risk Ben for any longer, but another week’s training will put Ben in a good place for this weekend.”
