Gillingham manager Steve Evans chasing a trio of new signings ahead of transfer deadline

Gillingham boss Steve Evans will hope it’s a busy day on the transfer front.

The window closes tonight for teams signing contracted players and Evans is hoping to add another three faces to his squad before the 11pm deadline.

Evans has already brought in five new players during the window, Callum Slattery, Olly Lee and Robbie Cundy joining on loan, Tyreke Johnson on a deal until the end of the season, after making his switch from Southampton permanent, and French keeper Sacha Bastien for the remainder of the campaign too.

Josh Eccles, Declan Drysdale, Trae Coyle, Zech Medley and Scott Robertson all returned to their parent clubs in January. Robertson, 19, has just returned to League 1 from Celtic, signing on loan at Doncaster Rovers for the rest of the season.

Gillingham recently sold goalkeeper Joe Walsh to QPR but Evans wasn’t expecting any of those funds to be available in the playing budget for this season.

The Gills currently have four loan players on their books and can select a maximum of five in any matchday squad. Earlier in the campaign they had six loanees to choose from.

Evans has said he is looking at bringing in a striker, a wide player and a central midfielder. On Sunday he commented that his squad needed “at least a couple of fresh faces” to help with their quest of making the play-offs this season.

“We are in the mix with two or three,” he said, on Saturday. “We have to bring two or three players in.

“Paul Scally (the chairman) is supporting us every step of the way.

“We need to bring in players like Slattery where you can have confidence to say, ‘there you go son, there is the starting shirt, go and play.’

“If it was a ticking the box exercise it would be striker, a centre mid and someone who can play either side, but they are tough to get. I can’t bring players in that don’t have a part to play.”
