Gillingham are short of numbers but manager Steve Evans says no signings are imminent

Gillingham manager Steve Evans admits any new additions this season are now unlikely.

Evans had been looking at bringing in uncontracted players to bolster his forward line but it’s been a frustrating hunt.

Vadaine Oliver and John Akinde are his main options upfront but he has others who can assist too, like Jordan Graham, Tyreke Johnson and Olly Lee and as long as there is no injury crisis there is no panic.

The Gills have been short of number upfront since striker Dominic Samuel picked up a hamstring injury in January that required surgery. He may just return for the final few games if the rehab goes well.

Speaking on Saturday, Evans was asked if they were likely to finish the season with what they had and said: “I think we have to. We are always looking if the right player becomes available.

“I said before I wanted one and he is still waiting on Real Madrid. He is kicking his heels training with a Championship club thinking there might be a deal there when he has been told there won’t be. It’s not just myself who is frustrated, I think there are other teams trying to get the kid as well. That is his business, not mine, we can only try."

Midfielder Henry Woods is back from surgery and on the bench at the weekend but not up to speed. The Gills have 21 senior players but Southampton loan player Callum Slattery is out for several more weeks after suffering ankle ligament damage in a recent match.

“We are down to bare bones,” Evans said. “We have a small squad. Alex MacDonald dropped out (through illness at the weekend) and we brought in Henry Woods with one day of training since his knee op. It shows how light we are compared to some, and I look at six or seven Portsmouth players in that stand (on Saturday), not even subs. They could start in any team outside the top three or four.”
