Gillingham manager Steve Evans wanted Sunderland striker Will Grigg before his move to MK Dons

Gillingham are likely to face striker Will Grigg tonight when taking on MK Dons - a player manager Steve Evans would have loved at Priestfield.

Grigg moved to Stadium MK on loan from Sunderland at the end of the January transfer window. The 29-year-old was someone Evans enquired about in his search for a striker but the fees were on a different level.

“We would have struggled to get Griggy’s fuel,” he joked.

“I asked the chief exec at Sunderland the question and he told me what the contribution would be. There was no point me phoning our chairman about it because we couldn’t get anywhere near it.

“That is a different market to us, we respect it and he has gone to a terrific club where he had a terrific period before (scoring 22 times in 50 games to help the Dons clinch promotion to the Championship in 2015).

“He will be looking to replicate it again.”

Evans and the Gills did keep Grigg quiet last season, denying the striker a goal in three of the matches that he played against them for Sunderland.

While the Gills have remained light in the attacking department, midweek visitors MK appear to be spoilt for choice. Grigg came off the bench at the weekend, along with another player Evans is a fan of, experienced forward Cameron Jerome. He scored one of the goals in a 2-0 defeat of the Gills in Milton Keynes earlier this season.

“He is an absolutely terrific lad...a terrific player,” Evans added.
