Chelsea goalkeeper Jamie Cumming joins Gillingham on loan

Gillingham boss Steve Evans has added another goalkeeper to the ranks and hopes to create a battle for the position.

The 21-year-old Chelsea keeper Jamie Cumming, a former England youth keeper, has agreed a deal for the 2021/22 season at Priestfield. Cumming, who played for League 2 Stevenage last season, will compete for a starting place with fellow new signing Aaron Chapman.

He has been with Chelsea since the age of eight and signed a professional contract with them in November 2018. His 11 appearances for them have come in the Football Trophy competition.

Last summer he agreed to join Stevenage for a season, making 47 appearances and claiming 18 clean sheets. The club had one of the best defensive records in the division.

Gills boss Steve Evans said: "Jamie was exceptional in League 2 last season.

"He comes here with no promises of game time, he will need to earn the right because Aaron Chapman has made a very impressive start.

"Jamie is very highly regarded at Chelsea and we are delighted they see Gillingham Football Club as a route for the lad to develop further."
