Gillingham consider options over loan deals for Henry Woods at Dover and Christian Maghoma at Eastleigh

Gillingham will consider their options before agreeing an extension of Henry Woods’ loan deal at Dover Athletic.

Midfielder Woods, 22, is on a deal at Crabble until January 10, one of two Gillingham players currently out on loan. Defender Christian Maghoma is enjoying a spell at non-league Eastleigh but his contract doesn’t expire until towards the end of the month.

Striker Aaron Cosgrave recently left Crabble after he was recalled by parent club Wimbledon. Gills boss Steve Evans, speaking before the weekend, believes Woods could play higher.

“We need to look at the balance of the squad,” said Evans, when asked about his loan pair.

“Dover are really keen to keep young Henry. Whether he is capable of playing a bit higher in that division, or in League 2, I would certainly think so to progress his career but we are on the end of a phone waiting for clubs to ring us.

“Eastleigh have said they are keen to keep Christian until the end of the season, we will make that decision nearer the end of January when his loan expires. We will wait and see where it goes with those two.”

Dover are bottom of the National League without a win from their 22 games to date. Woods has featured in 20 of those matches. They host Notts County on Saturday, January 8.

Maghoma, 24, has played 14 league games for Eastleigh and was on the scoresheet for them on Sunday in a 3-2 win over Weymouth, a result that left them 12th in the National League.

The Gills will be hoping to keep hold of the players they have on loan themselves.

Goalkeeper Jamie Cumming (Chelsea), Dan Phillips (Watford) and Dan Adshead (Norwich) have impressed during the first-half of the season.

“Every one of them has a part to play,” said Evans.

“As far as I am concerned I want to keep them but if their parent club chooses to change it, believe me I have some options.”
