Stefan Payne sent off for headbutting Grimsby Town team-mate Filipe Morais

Former Gillingham striker Stefan Payne was sent off on Saturday for headbutting one of his own team-mates.

Payne, now 29, was playing for Grimsby Town in League 2 when he had an altercation with Filipe Morais as the players headed for the half-time break.

Morais and Payne had words as they walked off towards the changing rooms at Bradford and it ended with the pair clashing heads. Grimsby’s twitter account said Payne’s actions were “unforgivable.”

The striker - who also played for Ebbsfleet United - is on loan at Grimsby from Tranmere Rovers. He scored on his debut for Town but has gone 12 without a goal.

Payne joined the Gills early on in his career, joining from Fulham, but in 18 months at the club he only made one league start, scoring once in 28 appearances.

He spent two years with Dover and his performances there earned him a move to Barnsley, who were newly promoted to the Championship.
