Gillingham beat Bromley in the Kent Senior Cup after a penalty save from Joe Walsh and goals from Regan Charles-Cook and Henry Woods

Goals from Henry Woods and Regan Charles-Cook guided Gillingham through to the third round of the Kent Senior Cup.

National League opponents Bromley weren’t short of chances in the game at Hayes Lane and a penalty save from Joe Walsh prevented them from cancelling out Woods’ opener.

Gillingham rested the players who had featured in the FA Cup match against West Ham on Sunday but were able to name a number of senior players.

Under-18 boss Craig Stone took charge of the Gills, with first team assistant Paul Raynor offering support. Manager Steve Evans was away on a scouting mission.

Mikael Mandron was playing the lone striker role for the Gills after returning to the fold following his time out over the weekend to be with his wife during the birth of their baby boy Knight.

Young forward Woods - who has been on loan at Concord Rangers - put the Gills infront with 24 minutes gone as he found the net from 15 yards.

National League high-flyers Bromley - managed by former Gills player Neil Smith - looked to respond straight away but Jordan Higgs couldn’t keep his effort down.

Michael Klass went closer when he tried to beat Walsh from distance, after spotting the Gills goalie off hisline, landing the effort on the roof of the net.

Just before the break the hosts then hit the crossbar with a header from Adrian Clifton.

At the other end there was time before the break for Charles-Cook to test keeper Tarek Najia and he pulled off a great save from an effort that seemed destined for the top corner.

Busy keeper Walsh had to make a couple of saves early in the second half to twice deny Clifton. Louis-Michel Yamfam thought he had levelled but the linesman’s flag was up for offside.

Bromley’s golden chance to level came from the penalty spot with 10 minutes left after youngster Matt Baker brought down Ollie Tanner but Walsh saved to deny Adam Mekki.

Charles-Cook doubled Gills’ account shortly after Walsh’s heroics, taking a great ball from substitute Matty Willock before finishing with a shot in off the post.

Gillingham: Walsh, Hodson, Fernandez, Baker, Garmston, Cisse, Pringle, Charles-Cook, Marshall (Willock 75mins), Woods, Mandron (Bancroft 75mins). Subs not used: Walker, Witt, Bramble. Attendance: 349.
