Gillingham goalkeeper Jack Bonham prevented a heavy defeat to MK Dons and looks ahead to Portsmouth visit

It’s all about the reaction now says Gillingham goalkeeper Jack Bonham.

The Gills were beaten 2-0 at MK Dons on Saturday and it could have been worse had Bonham not pulled off a series of late saves.

Gillingham have the chance to get back on track this Tuesday when Portsmouth make the trip to Priestfield.

Bonham said: “The positive is that we have a game on Tuesday, hopefully we can get a win and forget about the one on Saturday.

“As much as we want to win every game we know that we are not going to do that. It is just about reaction now, reactions are so important in football.

“We don’t fear anyone and on our day we can beat anyone. We have to go out with that mentality and produce a reaction.”

The game at MK was all-but over once the Gills had conceded a second shortly after the interval.

Bonham said: “It was disappointing after the very good start we have had in our first five games. They were better than us on the day, they played it our from the back and we couldn’t find a way to nullify them.

“We were still in the game at a goal down but when they go 2-0 up and the way they play, they keep the ball and it was frustrating for us and hard to get any kind of possession, we didn’t create chances. They were very good.

“The lads were disappointed afterwards and Tuesday is massive now.”

The Gills follow Tuesday’s game with the visit of Fleetwood, a midweek trip to early leaders Ipswich Town before then hosting League 1 giants Sunderland.

“Every game is tough and we just focus on what is to come next,” said the 27-year-old keeper, playing behind an inexperienced defensive unit this season.

He added: “We have a lot of work to do, they are very young, Zech and Jack Tucker are still learning, Connor and Jacko have done well.

“We have to keep working hard and hopefully we can get some clean sheets in the next few games.

"Every game is hard in League 1, every game is a battle, those teams have good resources and good players but we will be ready for it.”
