Drysdale, 21, played 15 times for Steve Evans’ side in league and cup, making his debut in the 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury in October.

His final appearance was Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Burton Albion, when he was replaced at half-time.

The Gills said: “We would like to thank Declan for his services and we wish him well for the future.”

Drysdale joined the Gills shortly after playing against them in a Carabao Cup tie.

Evans said at the time: "He is a powerful boy, has outstanding distribution and is very strong physically. He enhances everything we are about defensively."

Sky Blues team-mate Eccles was recalled by Coventry last Wednesday and came on as a 79th-minute substitute as Mark Robins’ side lost 2-0 to Norwich in the FA Cup third round.

Last night, Scott Robertson was recalled by Scottish giants Celtic after a loan spell at Priestfield.
