Cody McDonald would happily swap goals for points.

The Gills striker netted for the second time in three games, against Bristol City on Sunday.

It took his tally for the season to eight but he’s not out for personal glory.

He said: “I felt fit and sharp and I am happy with the way I am playing but ultimately it is about the team.

“I would much rather have average games and us to win.

“It is great to be scoring but I would rather see the team doing well.”

McDonald’s 47th minute strike looked to have put the Gills back in the game on Sunday, having conceded twice in the first half.

But Scott Wagstaff struck to make it 3-1 and that’s the way it stayed.

“First half we weren’t really at the races,” said the 28-year-old.

“If you give teams like Bristol City the opportunity to play then they will hurt you. That is what they did in the first half.

“The manager changed things up at half time and credit to him. We had a go but in the end the third goal really killed us because we did have a bit of momentum going. You can’t let teams like that play. We did that in the first half and they punished us for it.

“Ultimately it was the first half that cost us and something that we have got to look at in the future.”

McDonald’s goal was one highlight of a disappointing afternoon against the league leaders.

Describing the strike, he said: “(Goalkeeper) Nelson has kicked it long and we seem to have that little understanding. He does that quite a bit.

“I managed to get it under control and it opened up for me, I hit it, and luckily it has gone in the far corner. It probably looked better than what it was but a goal is a goal.”

McDonald is happy with his own form and hopes the goals keep coming.

He said: “I do feel sharp at the minute. It is not ideal coming out of the team but this happened to me last year. It shouldn’t take something like that for me to kick on but maybe it has done that again.

“It’s eight goals now and I will try and push on from that now and get around the mark from last year would be good.

“I won’t look too far ahead. I just need to concentrate on my performance because I feel everything is starting to come together. It is important I don’t take my foot off the gas and I need to keep pushing on.”
