Upchurch River Valley Golf Club veteran Roy Westcott hits a hole-in-one

Roy Westcott proved that age is no obstacle after hitting a 188-yard ace days before his 85th birthday.

The hole in one came from his tee shot on the seventh at Upchurch River Valley Golf Club but Westcott initially thought he had over shot the green.

Club secretary Greg Diddams, who was there to witness the feat, said: “His playing partners thought it had gone just past the flag but when approaching the green it became apparent that the ball wasn’t there.

"Roy assumed that it had run through the back of the green. He proceeded to look over the green whilst one of his playing partners looked in the hole.”

It was they who called out that the ball had landed in the hole.

“I was very surprised but of course extremely pleased,” Westcott said.

He was competing in the Veterans Quarterly Stableford competition at the time, using his driver off the tee.

Mr Diddams added: “Roy has been a member for 15 years and it’s great for one of our seniors to have done that, especially in the current climate, making it tough to play in, let alone get a hole in one.

"We are really chuffed to have seen him done it.”
