Gillingham forward Brandon Hanlan hungry for goals in Carabao Cup clash at Millwall

Brandon Hanlan did everything but score against Burton at the weekend and hopes to put that right on Tuesday.

The Gills are heading to Championship side Millwall in the Carabao Cup and Hanlan, who twice hit the woodwork in between setting Tom Eaves up with a couple of goals, won’t be putting his hand up for a breather as he hopes to fire the Gills into round two.

“I had six chances probably," he said. "I was unlucky on a couple of them, but we still won the game, and to get two assists as well was good.

“I feel like I contributed to the team. I just have to take it on now to Tuesday and get the ball into the back of the net.

“As a striker your job is to score goals, so that is a downfall, but on Tuesday I feel I will go out there for 90 minutes and put the ball in the back of the net.”

Hanlan did score in the game against Accrington and followed that up by walking away with the man-of-the-match champagne on Saturday.

It’s been an impressive start to life as a regular at League 1 level having left Charlton with barely a look-in.

He said: “The gaffer (Steve Lovell) has given me the opportunity to come here and play. I am here to show what I am about.

“I feel like football is a lot about opportunity and about whether you take it.

"At this point in my career I need to take as many opportunities as I can. Out on the pitch, it is only 90 minutes and I try and give all I have got.

“It is definitely a great start but it is about maintaining it, keeping it going for the whole season, getting goals and good performances and getting the wins and pushing the club forward.”

Charlton had an option in the summer to trigger another year on Hanlan’s contract but declined the opportunity. So far, it’s been to Gillingham’s benefit.

Hanlan said: “They didn’t want me any more and that opened up an opportunity for me to come to Gillingham.

“I don’t know whose decision it was but it was a good choice to get out of Charlton at that moment.

"There are a lot of strikers there and being young, at 21, you want to play games. This has given me the best opportunity.”
