Illness meant manager Steve Evans and captain Kyle Dempsey missed Gillingham's match at Colchester United

Gillingham manager Steve Evans was unable to attend Tuesday night’s game at Colchester because of illness.

The Gills were facing Colchester United in the Papa John’s Trophy match at the Jobserve Community Stadium.

Evans wasn’t the only one missing as captain Kyle Dempsey had also reported in ill.

It’s understood both are suffering from a bug..

Assistant manager Paul Raynor took charge of the Trophy match in Evans’ absence, with assistance from youth boss Craig Stone.

Gillingham were in action for the first time since a 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury on Saturday, August 28. The weekend game was postponed as opponents Charlton had a trio of international call-ups.
