Gillingham's Elliott List keen to please home fans when they face Charlton Athletic

Forward Elliott List is hoping Gillingham can sign off at home with a bang.

They face a Charlton team at Priestfield on Saturday who have already cemented their play-off place.

The Gills, meanwhile, need a point to guarantee League 1 survival should results elsewhere not go in their favour.

“It is always a big game,” said the former Crystal Palace youngster.

“It’s a derby and we want to put on a show. We want to show the fans some great football.

“Other players will have their own agendas to prove a point and, yes, it will be good.

“It would mean the world to beat them and it would be great to prove a point and give our fans something to cheer about.”

List was back in the starting XI on Monday at Bradford – reward for a positive showing off the bench in the comeback win over Plymouth on Friday.

It was his first start since early February, playing a role at the top of the midfield diamond.

“Playing 10 is not what I am used to,” he said.

“But I tried to get in between the lines, drive at players and get a shot off. I always enjoy being on the pitch and I am always looking for new challenges.

“It was nice to be back out there, to be back on the pitch trying to do the right thing.

“It was a great result to come back from 1-0 down on Friday, it was great timing to get the win at home, in front of our own fans.

“It was a bit of an odd game against Bradford because they are down already. We just tried to be professional and applied ourselves, gave something for the fans to watch and we got the point at the end of the day. We will take that.”

List was up against Bradford’s Josh Wright, the former Gills captain, and it was quite a battle.

“It was good,” said List.

“Me and Josh are good friends so that was fine. We were just fighting for our clubs.”

The Gills are almost safe for another season now and List feels they can move on from the regular battles at the bottom.

He said: “I am an optimist. I always think we should be aiming higher. We want to push on further and next season that is something that we want to do.

“It is a good team and with a few additions you never know.”
