Goalkeepers Stuart Nelson and Stephen Bywater are battling it out to face Crawley.

Last season’s player-of-the-year Nelson made his first league start since injuring his thumb on the opening day of the campaign at MK Dons when Gills played Preston on Tuesday, with on-loan Millwall keeper Bywater dropping to the bench.

Boss Peter Taylor explained his decision to restore Nelson to the team but hasn’t decided who will play when Crawley visit Priestfield on Saturday.

Taylor said: “I just felt it was right to have a look at it.

“We’ve got three excellent goalkeepers here (Glenn Morris being the third) and nobody’s absolutely guaranteed getting the first pick every time.

“Nels has worked exceptionally hard and I just thought I was going to have a look at it.”

Amine Linganzi is set to miss four weeks with a hamstring injury but Taylor is hopeful the hamstring problem that saw Josh Pritchard substituted against Preston isn’t serious.

Kortney Hause (knee) is out for two weeks, while Taylor was waiting on news on Callum Davies’ leg injury. Captain Doug Loft completes a three-game ban.

Gills could stick with the attacking 4-4-2 formation that tested Preston. Taylor said: “To be fair, I think anybody could have picked the team.

“There wasn’t a lot of choice because of the injuries we’ve got and it looks as though we might have another hamstring injury (with Pritchard)."
