Gillingham midfielder Robbie McKenzie has signed a new two-year contract with the League 2 club

Midfielder Robbie McKenzie has signed a new contract at Gillingham.

McKenzie looks set to play a key role in Gareth Ainsworth’s team next season after captaining the side under the new boss during Armani Little’s absence.

The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal that runs until the end of the 2026/27 season.

McKenzie said: “I am pleased to get it done. I’m really happy here, I’m settled and I feel like the future is going to be bright so I wanted to be a part of that."

He’s the second of the current squad to sign a new deal this week after keeper Glenn Morris penned a one-year contract.

McKenzie’s been at the Gills since the summer of 2020 when he moved from Hull City, occupying a variety of roles within the team, usually at right-back or in the centre of midfield.

He looked to be leaving at the end of the 2021/2022 season, after initially rejecting a new offer at the Gills, but eventually signed a contract at the end of the transfer window – extending the deal again in 2023 – and has continued to be a reliable player for the club.

He’s been playing the defensive midfield role under Ainsworth and chipped in with a few goals this season, including the strike of the season when he fired home from distance in a 1-1 draw at Walsall.

Only Jayden Clarke managed to better his tally of six goals this season.

He’s on course for a milestone appearance next season after taking his total games played at Gillingham to 194, scoring 15 goals in that time.
