Sidcup 27 Medway 26: Regional 2 South East match report

Medway suffered a weekend of frustration after a late 27-26 Regional 2 South East defeat at fellow high-fliers Sidcup.

The hosts enjoyed the better start with a powerful scrum and early try after a well-executed catch and drive.

Jordan Stubbington made a break but didn’t quite get to the line, while Medway put up a strong defence as the hosts won five penalties to keep the pressure up, another catch and drive doubling their lead before a successful conversion made it 12-0.

The visitors got off the mark when they launched an attack with Pete Cole and Stubbington joining up to push ahead. Harrison Fermor broke the line and Conor Chalmers touched down.

They then conceded a penalty to trail by 10, but scored the game’s next try when Antony Clement set up Jonah Hyde to touch down under the posts. With Fermor injured, Max Bullock added the extras.

The second half began with more power and possession from Sidcup and they increased their lead to 22-12. Medway fought back, though, with John Sipawa, who got four tries last time out, scoring their third try of the day. Bullock’s conversion made it 22-19.

Sidcup received a yellow card and Medway made the most of it with an attacking phase, Clement getting his first try of the year to give the away team the lead for the first time. However the hosts weren’t done and in the last five minutes managed a pushover try to win by a point.

This weekend sees fourth-placed Medway at home against third-spot Battersea Ironside in a rescheduled fixture.
