Gillingham boss Neil Harris on Norwich loan man Dan Adshead and his search for a free agent

Dan Adshead’s loan spell with Gillingham is officially over.

The Norwich City midfielder broke a bone in his foot midway through his loan spell and returned to the Premier League side for recovery.

Since that injury the Gills have seen Steve Evans depart as manager and Neil Harris take over.

Adshead, 20, played 19 games for the Gills following his arrival at the club in August.

Harris was asked about the midfielder and whether he was still on loan. Speaking on Thursday, the Gills boss said: “No, he has gone back to Norwich, just due to injury.

“I didn’t get to work with Dan and I didn’t get to see him but we have a good relationship with Norwich, my connections with them are very strong.”

Gillingham have Tom Dickson-Peters on loan from Norwich and the young striker has made four appearances off the bench in League 1.

Harris, meanwhile, has been on the lookout for additions but admits ready-to-go free agents are hard to find. He has got the green light from Gills chairman Paul Scally to add, and the search is ongoing.

He said: “There is a chance and we are looking, we have talked about it, we have had people put to us, we have done some research and we have spoken to people but how many players actually move and sign for clubs in February? Very little.

“We can be linked to players and see who is available but are they actually available and fit and do they want to come to Gillingham in League 1, location wise, if they live up north or abroad? There is lots to consider when it comes to free agents.

“We would like to add. Is there scope to add? Has the chairman been supportive? Yes, massively. Is it likely? Nothing is unlikely with players but it is very difficult. If we are what we are until the end of the season then it is my job to make sure I get the best out of the players.

“If there is a player we think can add value to the group between now and the end of the season, performance, experience or leadership-wise, then with the right qualities we could add.

“Being completely respectful to individual players, there is a reason they are available now. Yes there are players who signed with clubs until January and now they are available but there are very few.”
