Lordswood set to host Fire United Christian in the FA Vase first qualifying round

Lordswood will be wary of an upset in the FA Vase this weekend.

They are up against Eastern Counties League, Division 1 South strugglers Fire United Christian.

United, known as the Samba Boys, are bottom of their league after losing their first three games and are a step below the level Lordswood play at in the Southern Counties East.

It means Lordswood, who sit third in the SCEFL Prem, will be big favourites this weekend, something manager Richard Styles admits they aren't used to.

He said: “We are used to being the underdogs, but it’s about what happens on the day.

"It’s the magic of the cup, it doesn’t matter whether it’s the FA Cup or the Vase, anything can happen and we’ll have to be professional, not underestimate them and do our jobs right.”

Lordswood reached the last 64 of the competition last season, losing 1-0 to Bracknell Town in a game they had chances to win.

Styles said: “It’s a big competition for us, one we want to do well in and if we can keep progressing it’s great for everyone involved.

Lordswood have drawn their last two matches 2-2 in what was a tough Bank Holiday weekend for Styles' men. They came from two goals down to draw with Punjab at home and then twice conceded a lead at Deal on Monday.

“We were up against it, there were tired legs but we showed resilience, finishing the weekend unbeaten," said the manager.

Fellow Medway side Hollands & Blair are also in FA Vase action, with a trip to Southern Combination League side AFC Uckfield Town on Saturday.

They will be buoyed by a good performance against Chatham on Monday, narrowly losing 1-0 to the league leaders. Blair's opponents have scored four goals in each of their last three matches, in all competitions.
