Gillingham boss Steve Lovell looks ahead to a trip to Doncaster Rovers and some 'winnable games'

It’s crunch time for the Gills says boss Steve Lovell.

He knows they need results and he knows the consequences if they don’t.

Lovell takes his side to Doncaster on Saturday, a team sitting fourth in League 1, before facing many of those teams around them towards the bottom of the table.

The Gills have picked up one win from their last 10 in the league and ahead of the weekend, Lovell said: “You can't feel sorry for yourself because nobody else will; that doesn't win games.

“You win games by doing the work out on the training ground and that is what we do and what we will continue to do. Hopefully we will get the results and if we don't get the results then everybody knows what will happen.

“We know, we have been in the game long enough to understand that, but I just want to have the players that I signed (back from injury). I knew we would be alright this year with those players but unfortunately we have had too many of them off injured.

“The next four or five games now are massive for us, massive for me and massive the club, to where we are going to go this season.”

Lovell’s first game in charge was just over a year ago, beating Peterborough 1-0 away. His side have pulled off a number of shock results during the last 12 months and beating Doncaster this weekend would be another.

“We fancy our chances of getting something,” he said.

“They play attacking open football, a bit like ourselves. I think it will be a very open game and hopefully we will play like we did against Portsmouth (beating the league leaders a fortnight ago).

“The games that we have got coming up are all now winnable for us even the one on Saturday.

“There is nobody I fear, only ourselves. Last Saturday we could have gone in two or three nil up at half time and game over, they (Southend) were hanging. They came out second half and and had a little bit of spark and a bit of bad defending cost us the game.”

It was a blow, after the morale-boosting win over Portsmouth the week before, but Lovell added: “You can't be disheartened, you have to keep yourself above everything and be positive.

“We know we can do it. it is a just about that consistency. It is not far off but we have to start producing and getting results, grinding them out and then building a little momentum.”
