Gillingham have signed Dundee United winger Billy King on loan

Scottish winger Billy King will be an exciting addition for the Gills, says boss Steve Lovell.

The 24-year-old joins on loan for the rest of the season from Dundee United and is expected to be involved this Saturday when the Gills visit Coventry.

Lovell said: “I am excited by him, he is a good lad and I think he will bring us a new dimension.

“He is very lively, he is quite tricky and he works hard. I am glad he has agreed to come down to us and I look forward to having him available for us on Saturday.”

King has played 18 games for Scottish Championship side United this season, scoring three goals, but was made available for loan.

When Lovell found out, he jumped at the chance to bring him to Kent.

The versatile forward was in the crowd on Tuesday to watch Gills’ goalless draw with Accrington Stanley.

“I didn’t think he would become available,” said Lovell.

“An agent said he was and I spoke to Robbie Neilson, his manager, who also had had him at Hearts. He said he was a great character and I have seen a lot of his clips in games.

“He is quite versatile and I am excited to see him train and see him perform for us.”

The Edinburgh-born player said: "It’s a big move for me but one which I am very excited about.

"After speaking to the manager I felt it was a project I wanted to be part of. I’m looking forward to helping move the club up the League 1 table."

King has had previous loan spells with Rangers and Inverness and has played youth football for Scotland, up to under-21 level. His brother, Adam King, plays for Swansea but wasn’t involved in the weekend FA Cup clash against the Gills

Lovell is hoping other new faces arrive before the January transfer window closes tomorrow (Thursday) night.

He said he was “still looking to bring in a couple more acquisitions” before the window shuts for the remainder of the season.
