Medway 41 Huel Tring 26: Regional 1 South East match report

Medway produced a late surge to stun Huel Tring and take the Regional 1 South East spoils 41-26 at Priestfields.

The visitors started the sharper. Two early penalties allowed them to pin Medway deep and, despite resolute defending on the goal line, Tring broke through to open the scoring. Another home lapse moments later saw Tring’s No.8 cross untouched to make it 10-0.

A penalty try was awarded to the hosts when Noah Hyde was illegally tackled close to the line, cutting the deficit to three points, and Tring’s indiscipline began to show, with a yellow card for their winger, but they led 16-12 at half-time.

Medway’s attacking shape improved in the second half, but handling errors and turnovers denied them clear chances. A yellow card for John Sipawa briefly halted their momentum and Tring capitalised with a converted try while another penalty made it 26-12.

However the Medway pack began to dominate and the final 15 minutes saw the game turned on its head. Josh Knight powered over from close range to spark belief, before Sipawa stormed through for another score.

Pete Cole then broke the line, offloaded to Sonny Trew-Neville, and Medway led by three for the first time. Minutes later, Hyde’s quick thinking set up Liam Kiernan in the corner, before Knight, buoyed by the crowd, sealed the win with a barnstorming final try. Harrison Fermor’s boot added the extras.

Tring, who had impressed for much of the game, were left shell-shocked by the late onslaught - capped by multiple yellow cards as Medway’s physicality proved too much.

The win sees Medway sixth in the standings ahead of Saturday’s visit to fourth-placed North Walsham.
