Moses Itauma claims TKO win over American Mike Balogun to retain WBO Inter-continental and WBA international heavyweight titles in Glasgow – Wembley outing could be next in July on Usyk vs Dubois 2 undercard

Moses Itauma delivered another top performance to see off American Mike Balogun.

The Chatham heavyweight claimed a TKO win after his opponent was downed once in the first round and twice in the second - referee John Latham waving the contest off following that third knockdown.

Itauma’s victory came 46 seconds into the second round and took his record to 12-0 in the pro ranks while also topping the WBO rankings.

The 20-year-old wasn’t expected to be overly tested by his latest opponent when they met at the SSE Hydro arena in Glasgow - and he wasn’t.

He’s now seen off his last eight opponents inside two rounds. Saturday night’s fight was scheduled for 10 but it was never going to go the distance.

Itauma had secured a TKO win over Demsey McKean in the opening round during his previous fight, back in December in Riyadh. This was his first outing of 2025.

Big things are expected of Itauma - with promoter Frank Warren describing the Medway boxer as “a special talent” who “will one day carry British boxing.” Post-fight he was labelled “an emerging superstar.”

He was fighting on the undercard of the Josh Taylor vs Ekow Essuman fight.

The young southpaw had overcome every challenge put in front of him and in Glasgow, 41-year-old Balogun - a former NFL linebacker - couldn’t live with a man half his age.

Balogun made a bright start in the opening seconds of the contest but Itauma was always too quick, too smart and too powerful.

Within 90 seconds, Balogun was already on his knees after a couple of quick left handers from Itauma, but he just about beat the count to carry on and survive for another round.

Itauma wasted no time in making his move in the second.

With 10 seconds gone, Balogun was on the canvas again after taking a huge right hook but bravely got up after a count of nine and looked to rally, only to be sent to the floor one final time seconds later.

Itauma described his opponent as “one tough cookie” after he had got off the canvas from the second knockdown but will want bigger challenges next.

“Fair play to him,” he said. “Thanks to Mike Balogun for taking the fight because not a lot of people would.

"I don't have to worry about doing rounds but my team wants to see me in a 10-rounder. I want in with the big dogs."

Watching ringside was Martin Bakole – previously tipped as a potential opponent, but Warren dismissed that from happening after Itauma’s latest win.

Warren said: “Moses is a special, special talent who is no doubt moving on to big things.”

Itauma could back back in action soon, possibly on the undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk v Daniel Dubois 2 show at Wembley Stadium on July 19.
