Former Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler appointed assistant manager at Eastleigh

Former Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler is back in football - at non-league Eastleigh.

Hessenthaler has been out of the game since leaving League 2 strugglers Leyton Orient earlier this season.

But Eastleigh chairman Stewart Donald has told BBC Radio Solent that Hessenthaler will be at their club next season.

Current caretaker manager and director of football at Eastleigh, Richard Hill, has been confirmed as their new manager for the 2017/18 season - with Hessenthaler announced as his assistant boss.

Hessenthaler – a Gills legend as a player - had two spells as manager at Priestfield. He took the Gills to their highest league position in the Football League but eventually resigned with the club fighting against relegation in the Championship.

He returned to the club to try and steer them out of League 2 but couldn’t manage it after two seasons at the helm. He stayed on as director of football under Martin Allen for a while and was back again as no.2 under Peter Taylor. He also assisted in the interview process to appoint Justin Edinburgh.
