League 1 players out of contract this summer including Gillingham, Charlton, Hull, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Steve Evans' hopes of keeping his squad together

Gillingham manager Steve Evans admits it will be tough to keep the current squad together but there won't be a shortage of free agents this summer.

Evans managed to bring in some freebies last year that have helped to keep the Gills hanging onto the coattails of the teams in the play-off race, with the likes of Kyle Dempsey, Jordan Graham and Vadaine Oliver all excelling. But who will be here next summer?

Asked if he will be able to keep the squad together, Evans said: "It is going to be very difficult because some of them have done really well, that is what it is.

"I didn't see too many people queuing up for them when we brought them in last summer, but they have done very well. They have acquitted themselves brilliantly to how we do things but to be in that elite group, that play-off group."

While several are out of contract there has been continued interest for captain Dempsey.

Speaking to the club media on Sunday, he added: "Had this group been together since last August, statistics tell us we would have been fighting for promotion.

"We as a club must learn we cannot report for a new season with six players and no training facilities, that does not build you the base you need."

The Gills didn't reveal any contract lengths when making their summer signings but it is understood Graham is one of those who is out of contract. Others who are on expiring deals include Connor Ogilvie, Stuart O'Keefe and goalkeeper Jack Bonham. Thomas O'Connor (Southampton) and Olly Lee (Hearts) have both played their part but are only on loan deals.

On Saturday, Evans said he would be talking to the chairman post-season about his own future. He wants to be able to push the club forward and added: "I am here for the fight but we need to have a chance in some of the fights."

Gillingham will certainly be seeing some of their players depart. But what of the rest of League 1? The market will be awash with talent, some beyond the means of the Gills. But here's a look at the players that have their contracts up this summer, from most teams in their division.
