Gillingham assistant boss Richard Dobson was disappointed they didn’t get what they deserved on Saturday.
The Gills scored an equaliser in the 95th minute, but prior to that had dominated the League 2 match against Cheltenham Town.
Report: Gillingham 1 Cheltenham Town 1
A staggering 30 attempts at goal included 10 on target, while the Gills also had 11 corners, over 100 successful final-third passes, 51 crosses and 48 touches in the opposition box.
Despite the stats, the Gills ended up conceding a goal on 87 minutes. They were staring at a third straight league defeat before Elliott Nevitt smashed home an equaliser with just 10 seconds left, and the match finished 1-1.
Dobson said: “The feeling [after the game] is disappointment that we didn't get what we deserved.
“It's a disappointed dressing room, but the performance was very, very good.
“We created enough chances. They're huge stats and you normally come away with a win with stats like that.
“They're incredible stats. I thought early on we started really well. We had two or three chances in the first five minutes.
“If you put one of them in, then the game becomes a lot easier. Their goal led a charmed life at times. Everything that seemed to deflect, deflected into the keeper's hands. It was just one of those days where it didn't quite fall.
“Could we maybe have been a little bit sharper on balls that are dropping down? It's something we'll have to look at during the week.
“If we keep creating that amount of chances, we will win games. That's just fact. The laws of probability say that you can't keep producing that many chances and not win games of football.”
Goals and result aside, the performance was pleasing for Dobson.
He said: “I'm not disappointed with a lot of what I saw. I'm pleased with the way we played on the front foot. I'm pleased with the way we pressed. I'm pleased with the combinations that got us into those areas.
“As I said to the players, the only thing lacking was the ball that says, ‘Score me’. Did we put a cross in that really said, ‘Score me, get on the end of it?’ That's the only thing that we're lacking, but that's something we can work on going forward. The rest, I'm really pleased with.
“I just said to them, ‘Listen, the performance was good. On another day, you could win 4 or 5-0 with that game’.
“The fact that the clock kept ticking and we couldn't get that first goal just gave them a chance in the game. They take their chance with the one shot on target that they have.
“It's a tough division, people come and make it difficult for you, as we thought they might. The fact that we created so many chances is probably something we should be happy about.”
With five minutes added onto the 90, Dobson remained confident they would have more chances to equalise, as the team have fought back from tricky situations on a number of occasions this season.
“I always believe in the boys,” he said. “They have great belief and confidence as well. You worry that they're just going to dig trenches on the edge of their box and defend for their lives. That's what they did.
“They got blocks in. Once you lose control of the game and the opposition score first, it suddenly becomes very difficult.
“We created so many chances in the game, I felt that we might get another one.
“It's good that they're disappointed that they haven't won the game and I think that says a lot now.
“They're a team that want to win matches at home. They played to win and I think if we can just keep reproducing that, we'll be alright in games in the future.”
