Reaction to Sevenoaks' 6-1 FA Cup win against Lordswood

There were contrasting emotions for the managers after Sevenoaks put Lordswood to the sword in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Lordswood looked a long way from the team that had won their opening two Southern Counties East League games while Sevenoaks - in action for the first time this campaign - got off to a stunning start.

"We played some great football, dominated it and looked like a team from the league above," said Sevenoaks boss Micky Collins. "It's a great start but it's very early days.

"We watched Lordswood against Sheppey and we knew where we could punish them.

"They're a very hard-working and organised side but once we got into those areas then our quality showed. The build-up play was excellent.

"The prize money is fantastic this year so it's great."

After conceding four first-half goals, Lordswood boss Richard Styles knew his team didn't do themselves justice.

"I'm very disappointed and not happy with the performance at all," said Styles.

"The first half-hour I felt we were fine, we were on top and they scored against the run of play. We got back level straight away which was great and then had a spell when we were on top and I thought we could win this.

"But then we let ourselves down with silly mistakes and goals that were similar. We haven't reacted or responded to it. Their pace hurt us on the counter but no-one took it upon themselves to stop that or react from it or make sure it didn't happen again.

"A lot of their goals have come from either a poor clearance or us giving the ball away and then getting hit on the counter attack. It's not like us, it's very out of character which is disappointing. It's not a true reflection of us."

Sevenoaks now turn their attentions to the start of their Bostik South East campaign - which gets under way at home to Horsham on Saturday.

"We want to finish as high as we can," added Collins. "There's no pressure on us, we've had that for the last couple of seasons to deliver a league title, which we've done.

"But for me this season is all about are we going to survive because we've worked hard enough and spent enough money to get here. The last thing we want is to end back where we were.

"We want to be organised, give a good account of ourselves and play some attractive football. If we get to Christmas and we're up anywhere near where we could be then maybe we'll have a look at it.

"We want to start the season on the right footing, it can be a wide open league and hopefully we can get three points in our first game next week."
