Josh Rees will remain training with the youngsters until he finds a new club, says assistant boss Paul Raynor.
The Gills no.2 said on Friday night, after the friendly match against Southend, that Rees had turned down two offers to leave.
He’s been told by the new management that he has no future at Gillingham and has been training and playing with the under-23s throughout pre-season.
Rees scored a late equaliser for a young Gills team at Sheppey United on Saturday.
Raynor said: “He has had two offers to leave and chose not to take them, so we will wait and see.
“He will keep training with the younger boys, the under-23s and the youth team, and we will wait until another opportunity to leave comes and we won’t stand in his way.
“We’ve made it clear that he is not part of the plans moving forward but we need to keep him fit and ready to go for when that opportunity arises.”
Midfielder Rees, 25, joined the Gills last summer after scoring 16 goals for Bromley in the Conference but made just seven league starts last term.
Gills new boss Steve Evans was keen to make changes to the midfield department and has brought in the likes of Stuart O’Keefe, Matty Willock and Ouss Cisse.
Several players have already departed the Gills this summer.
Dean Parrett has left to join Stevenage, who the Gills play on Saturday, while Callum Reilly has signed for AFC Wimbledon.
