Christian Maghoma remains available for transfer amid interest from the Scottish Premiership

Gillingham defender Christian Maghoma has been training with a Scottish top-flight side.

The 23-year-old is available for transfer but could be involved in Gills’ pre-season game against Dartford on Tuesday night if no deal looks imminent.

The unnamed Scottish Premiership side looked at Maghoma last week and he was left out of Gillingham’s squad for the weekend game at Welling United.

He was signed last summer on a free transfer by manager Steve Evans but the former Tottenham youngster has struggled to make an impact, starting just four league games for the Gills during the 2020/21 campaign. His last appearances came in the FA Cup defeat to Exeter City in November.

Evans is happy to welcome Maghoma back but with Max Ehmer returning to the club and another centre-back likely to join, competition for a starting role in the heart of Gillingham's defence will remain tough.

The Gills boss said: “I told him in the summer he would have a clean piece of paper to try and stake a clam.

"I think it will be difficult given the competition because the intention is to bring in another central defender along with Max and Jack, so it may be difficult, but one thing you have to be as a manager or head coach, you have to be absolutely and unequivocally fair to everyone.

"You have to be able to put your head on the pillow at night and say there is nobody you have been unfair to, that is the minimum.”
