Gillingham to face Tottenham under-21s in the EFL Trophy first round

Gillingham will meet Tottenham again in their EFL Trophy first round group.

Earlier this week the Gills were placed in a group containing Ipswich Town and Colchester United.

Groups were completed when the invited top-flight academy sides were drawn into each of the 16 groups.

The Gills didn't do well last season when they met Tottenham's youngsters, losing 4-0, in a match played at the Valley, home of Charlton.

They also lost 4-0 to eventual winners Portsmouth in last season's group stage, before ending their campaign with a meaningless 2-1 win over Crawley.

Gillingham's game against Tottenham's under-21s will be staged at Priestfield and fixture details of the other two group games will be announced soon.

Opening group stage fixtures will be played week commencing Monday, September 2.

The top two teams qualify for the second round, with teams earning three points for a win and one for a draw. Drawn games will also be finished with a penalty shootout, enabling teams to earn an additional point.

Earlier this summer the Gills were handed a home tie against Newport County in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
