It’s been 50 years since the Gills last won a game at Barnsley.

They’ve had little to celebrate at Oakwell in recent years, losing on their last five visits.

Gillingham’s last win at Barnsley came in August 1968, winning 1-0.

Steve Lovell’s men not only have history against them, but they are also up against a team who have made a solid start since relegation from the Championship.

Barnsley are unbeaten in their first five games of the League 1 season, returning to Oakwell after successive away games, picking up four points on their travels. The Gills are three games without a win.

Elliott List came to the rescue for the Gills last weekend.

A moment of brilliance from the Gills forward earned Gillingham a point from their League 1 clash against Coventry.

The opening half wasn’t short of chances but neither side were able to finish.

Jonson Clarke-Harris put Coventry ahead seconds after the restart, having bossed the opening half, but the Gills were level through substitute List.

Goals from Ben Pearson and Sam Winnall were enough for Barnsley when the two sides last met at Oakwell, in September 2015.

It was the first time boss Justin Edinburgh had suffered back-to-back defeats during his stint as Gills manager.

Back then, the Gills were sitting third in League 1, while Barnsley were mid-table but the hosts were too good for Edinburgh’s men, failing to find the net for the first time during an impressive start to their 2015/16 campaign.

Gillingham will be without Mark Byrne and Regan Charles-Cook after both picked up hamstring injuries in last weekend’s game against Coventry.

Fellow midfielder Dean Parrett also remains out but the Gills are boosted by the return to fitness of Josh Rees. He scored twice in a 7-1 win over Luton Town in a reserve game on Monday.

Games: 6 Yellows: 13 Reds: 1

The Oxfordshire-based referee dished out seven yellow cards during his last Gills match, against MK Dons last season. Scott Wagstaff, Luke O’Neill and Max Ehmer all went into the referee’s notepad.

Earlier that season he took charge of Gills’ home game against Bradford, sending Conor Wilkinson off in the 75th minute. Gillingham lost the game 1-0.

The Gills forward was sent off after throwing his body, feet first, at an attempted clearance by Bradford’s Timothee Dieng. Boss Ady Pennock said he would appeal before changing his mind after the referee’s assessor said he agreed with the decision.

From the opposition;

Assistant head coach Andreas Winkler addressed the press before the weekend clash.

Barnsley are unbeaten so far this season and are managed by German Daniel Stendel, joining in the summer having previously been incharge at Hannover 96.

Fellow German Winkler spoke of his pleasure at seeing Barnsley fight back against Scunthorpe last time out, drawing 2-2 after being two goals down.

He said: “We weren’t sure how this young squad would handle the situation, but they did very well and I was very happy with the draw.”

Like the Gills, Barnsley have been keen to take the game to the opposition this season.

Winkler said: “We play with high full-backs to put the pressure on the opposition defence, so they’re very important. We have someone who is a good header of the ball playing centre forward, so we need players who are good crossers of the ball.”

Barnsley recently sold Tom Bradshaw to Millwall, initially on loan with a figure of £1m reportedly agreed. His replacement is Fulham’s Cauley Woodrow, a former England under-21 international, and he is set to make his debut this Saturday.

One to watch - Kieffer Moore;

Big striker Kieffer Moore is the man Barnsley’s full-backs will be targeting with their balls into the Gills box this weekend.

Gillingham’s defenders will need to keep a close eye on the 6ft 5inch striker, who has scored four goals in Barnsley’s last two games, including three against Rochdale.

He scored against the Gills for Rotherham, firing home past Tomas Holy in an impressive 3-1 win for Steve Lovell’s side back in October.

Moore scored 13 goals in 22 appearances for Rotherham in League 1, which led to a January move to Barnsley in a £750,000 deal.

Boss Daniel Stendel, who inherited the striker after taking charge in the summer, said: “He is tall, quick and mobile.”

Barnsley are the clear 2/ 5 favourites with BoyleSports ahead of the weekend fixture with 7/2 the draw and a massive 7/1 for an away win.

Big striker Kieffer Moore is even money to find the net while Tom Eaves is 5/2 to score anytime.

The Tykes have already beaten two teams 4-0 this season and it’s 14/1 to make it a hat-trick.

Gillingham won 1-0 at Barnsley 50 years ago and it’s 18/1 for a repeat scoreline and a huge 40/1 for 2-0.
