And Phil Gallagher, television presenter of the hit arts and crafts show for preschoolers, is hoping that the youngsters will show him their favourite books.

To encourage this, the first 20 children to visit him on Saturday, October 20 will receive their very own Mister Maker book bag.

Phil will be available at the KM Charity Team’s stand to meet fans, pose for photographs, and sign autographs from 10am for an hour.

The meet and greet is part of the shopping centre’s 40th anniversary celebrations, which boast a variety of activities and events – including retro games and competitions in conjunction with kmfm - plus an appearance by the Mayor of Medway.

Phil said: “Hempstead Valley (or "The Sava" as I still call it) is the first shopping centre I can remember visiting as a child and it holds so many happy memories for me. I am proud to help celebrate this big birthday and to support the inspiring work of the KM Charity Team.”

The presenter is a key supporter of Buster’s Book Club, a reading reward initiative for schools, which is run by children’s educational charity the KM Charity Team.

Schools signing up to the scheme by December 1 will go into a prize draw to win 400 books.

Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team, said: “Phil is such a hero to children and we are thrilled that he is spreading the message of the importance – and fun – of enjoying a good read.”

He added: “We can’t wait for the Hempstead Valley celebrations and would urge everyone to come along and join in.”

Su Button, the centre’s marketing manager, said: “The Hempstead team is looking forward to celebrating the successes of Hempstead Valley over the past 40 years and to the future of this highly popular and thriving shopping centre!”
