Easter boost for literacy scheme

Kent Rotarians held an Easter Egg trail to support a leading literacy initiative.

Members of Strood Rotary Club staged the event in historic Rochester to raise funds for the reading reward scheme Buster’s Book Club.

Children were given eggs to decorate and tasked with taking mobile phone photos of them at 10 different locations in the town. At the end of the trail, which started and concluded by the river Medway at The Esplanade, they were presented with chocolate eggs and certificates.

Paul Sutton, chairman of the Rotary Club of Strood’s fundraising committee said: “Buster’s is a great scheme with a proven track record of raising pupils’ literacy engagement and performance, and the Rotary Club of Strood is delighted to be involved with it.”

Hazel Sheehan from the club said: “The weather was great on Monday and the children that did the trail had a good time.”

Simon Dolby from Buster’s Book Club said: “The backing we receive from Rotary Clubs across the county is fantastic but I want to give a special thank you to Strood for staging this event to support us.”

Buster’s Book Club encourages children to read more at home. Participating schools’ classes compete internally for weekly trophies, and winners of monthly inter-school challenges are rewarded with tickets to leisure attractions or visits by celebrity storytellers.

Besides the Rotary Club of Strood, Buster’s Book Club is supported by the Ernest Cook Trust, Little Cheyne Court, the Kent Community Foundation, Golding Vision, Orbit, Specsavers, Leeds Castle, Diggerland, Hornby, Wildwood, Acorns Read and Grow, the Crown Foundation, The Education People and Kent, Medway and Bexley councils.
