Canterbury’s biggest charity quiz of the year set a record for the highest score ever recorded at the event.
KM Big Charity Quiz winners, The Moomins, scored 97 per cent – the biggest team score in the event’s 19 year history, and earned themselves vouchers for the Two Sawyers Ale House and Kitchen and wine donated by Shepherd Neame.
Moomins came second last year, being beaten by the Unicorn pub in St Dunstan’s and having previously won the event in 2017.
Second placed Medway Mail and Female were four points behind and will join the Moomins, Nigel’s Numbnuts and Sturry Friends in the county final at the end of the year, taking on top teams from the Medway, Ashford and Maidstone heats of the KM Big Charity Quiz.
More than £4,000 was raised for the charity pot, with the Kentish Gazette’s Charity of the Year – Eva’s Angels – earning a slice, along with the League of Friends at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital and children’s road safety and literacy projects.
Charities booking tables received tickets to a special draw that earned a share of the event income. The League of Friends won the draw, earning them a bonus £500.
A number of organisations entered multiple teams and used the event as a team-builder, earning their top-placed teams prizes. ADM Old Schools won the ADM Computing mini competition, and Templeman of Doom came top from the clutch of teams from the University of Kent. The quiz took place at the university’s sports hall.
Quizmaster Simon Dolby praised the small army of event partners helping to make the event a success, with Shepherd Neame, Barclays, League of Friends volunteers, and Kent Sport singled out for special thanks.
Mr Dolby said: “Shepherd Neame donated a lorry load of beverages to stock the charity bar, and staff from Barclays Canterbury manned the bar and used their pound-for-pound scheme to boost the charity pot.
“We are so grateful to both of these major partners for their continuing support.”
Also supporting the event were McDonald’s, Independent Music Productions, Office Angels, Eurostar, Hornby Visitor Centre, Whitstable greengrocer Granny Smith’s, Encade Photography and Specsavers.
