A Canterbury supermarket has donated hundreds of pounds to primary school reading rewards scheme Buster’s Book Club.
The KM Charity Team literacy initiative was one of three good causes selected by Asda’s Canterbury superstore for its spring green-token scheme.
Buster’s was nominated by a customer at the store, and shoppers used green tokens handed out at checkout to vote on how a pot of £900 should be distributed between it and the other charities.
Voting took place between April and June, and customers decided that Buster’s Book Club should receive £200.
Teresa Gower, community champion at the store, said: “Every Asda store has a community board, and every quarter we have three charities on our charity scheme, which is done through the green tokens.
“We help charities and good causes within the local area. Every Asda will have a green token scheme so we can help a lot of charities over the country.
“It’s really nice to know that £200 of this money is going to Buster’s Book Club, because it’s going to aid a lot of children across the whole community.”
KM Charity Team literacy coordinator Kay Devine said: “We are so grateful to Asda and its customers for choosing Buster’s Book Club as a green token charity, and donating this money to the scheme.
“Donations like these are so important in helping us carry out our work promoting a love of books and reading among children across the whole community.”
Buster’s Book Club encourages children to read more at home. Participating schools’ classes compete internally for weekly trophies, and winners of monthly inter-school challenges are rewarded with tickets to leisure attractions or visits by celebrity storytellers.
Buster’s is supported by the Ernest Cook Trust, the Education People, Little Cheyne Court, the Kent Community Foundation, Golding Vision, Orbit, Medway Council, Specsavers, Leeds Castle, Diggerland, Hornby, Wildwood, Rotary, Acorns Read and Grow, the Crown Foundation, the Gibbons Trust, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Buckland Media, Kent County Council and Westwood Cross.
