The awards are open to good causes, volunteer groups such as parent-teacher associations and individuals making a difference to the community in Thanet.

The winners will share £10,000 in prize money, and the deadline for entries is noon on November 27.

South Thanet MP Mr Mackinlay said: “These awards are such a fantastic idea: there are so many groups, charities and individuals in Thanet doing some really wonderful work to make the district a great place to live and work in – from the RNLI to parents helping out at football or swimming clubs.

“These are people giving up their precious time to do valuable work for the good of their community without concern for recognition or reward.

“So it’s great that their dedication, achievements and community spirit are celebrated with these awards.

“I strongly urge charities and individuals to submit entries, either for themselves or others, and look forward to celebrating with the rest of the borough when the winners are announced.”

Nominations for the awards can be submitted at thanetcommunityawards.co.uk. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in January.

Westwood Cross, London Array and the Thanet Extra will each present a cheque to a chosen charity for £2,000, and the shopping centre will also champion its winner over a 12-month period.

Another £4,000 will be shared among three runner-up charities and the three individual volunteer winners.
