Brenda Blethyn OBE, the Bafta-winning star of hit ITV show Vera, read children Stuck by Oliver Jeffers during a special whole-school assembly at Garlinge Primary School and Nursery in Margate.

The storytime session was secured by the school’s Class Six B after it won a regional challenge with the KM Charity Team’s reading reward scheme Buster's Book Club.

The children of Class Six B were also presented with a special trophy and free-entry vouchers to Revolution Skatepark and Climbing Centre in Broadstairs.

KM Charity Team chief executive Simon Dolby said: “This was such a wonderful experience for the pupils and staff of Garlinge school. Brenda was, as everybody would expect, line-perfect and an absolute star.

“It was a great example of how schools can benefit from Buster’s Book Club, and how the scheme is so effective at motivating children to pick up books and read.”

Buster’s Book Club is designed to make reading cool and sets children individual home-reading targets.

Children are set a series of challenges throughout the year, including inter-class and inter-school events, which culminate with an annual record reading attempt.

Prizes for the challenges include story-teller visits, hampers of books and free-entry tickets to leisure attractions such as Diggerland and Leeds Castle.

It is supported by Little Cheyne Court wind farm, the Kent Community Foundation, Golding Vision, Orbit, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Medway Council, Specsavers, Leeds Castle, Planet Ice, Diggerland, Hornby, Wildwood and Kent County Council.
