They won the books in a special prize draw.

Staff at Shears Green Infant School have spoken about the children’s delight at winning the books, and the dramatic effect that taking part in the club has had on pupils’ reading levels.

Sophie Jacomb, reception lead at the Northfleet school, said: “We are really excited to have won the challenge, and the children are absolutely loving the 400 books.”

Year 1 lead Farzana Khan said: “Buster’s Book Club has really helped our children with their reading and enthusiasm. And it’s been really nice to see the amount of children to start reading increase as the work has gone on.”

And English coordinator Katie Williams added: “It’s also helped to challenge them. They like to meet the target, but now they want to beat it. And they want to be the one who has read the most in the class, so it’s really helped them to read more.”

Buster’s Book Club is run by the KM Charity Team, and encourages children to read more at home.

Classes taking part compete for Class of the Week trophies, and winners of monthly inter-school challenges are rewarded with tickets to leisure attractions or visits by celebrity storytellers.

KM Charity Team chief executive Simon Dolby said: “I’m so pleased to hear about that Shears Green’s pupils are enjoying their new books.

“And it’s great to hear about the positive impact of Buster’s Book Club on their reading levels. I think it goes to show that everybody wins with Buster’s – it is so effective at motivating children to read more.”

Buster’s Book Club is supported by Gatwick Airport, the Ernest Cook Trust, Little Cheyne Court (Romney Marsh), Kent Community Foundation, Golding Vision, Orbit, Medway and Kent councils, Specsavers, Leeds Castle, Diggerland, Hornby, Wildwood, Rotary, Acorns Read and Grow, Crown Foundation, the Gibbons Trust and Westwood Cross.
