Buster’s Book Club, the KM Charity Team’s reading reward scheme, was one of three good causes selected by Asda’s Gillingham Pier store for its spring Green Token Giving campaign.

The store set aside £1,000 to share between the three charities, and customers chose how the money was to be allocated.

Buster’s Book Club will receive £200 of the money.

Asda community life champion Diana Morgan said: “The Asda Foundation aims to transform communities and improve lives for those living locally to Asda stores - whether that’s through supporting charities, local good causes or activities that bring people together.

“One of the ways Asda helps the community is with the Green Token Giving scheme.

“Green Token Giving is nominated by Asda customers to support local charities and good causes and voted for in stores, and we are delighted to have Busters Book Club as one of our recipients.”

Buster’s Book Club coordinator Kay Devine said: “We are so grateful to Asda and its customers for choosing Buster’s as one of its Green Token Giving good causes.

“The club is a tried and tested programme with ready-made resources that engage pupils and involve parents in their children’s reading journey.

“It creates a buzz around reading for pleasure that reverberates in every classroom and is celebrated school-wide each week in assembly.

“And the money Asda has donated will support the education and development of young children at schools across Medway.”

Buster’s encourages children to read more at home. Participating schools’ classes compete internally for weekly trophies, and winners of monthly inter-school challenges are rewarded with tickets to leisure attractions or visits by celebrity storytellers.

It is supported by the Ernest Cook Trust, the Education People, Little Cheyne Court wind farm, the Kent Community Foundation, Golding Vision, Orbit, Specsavers, Leeds Castle, Diggerland, Hornby, Wildwood, Rotary, Acorns Read and Grow, the Crown Foundation, the Gibbons Trust, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Buckland Media, Kent and Medway councils and Westwood Cross.
