Shoppers in Medway can support young readers this spring just by dropping a token into a box.

Buster’s Book Club, the KM Charity Team’s reading reward scheme, is one of three good causes selected by Asda’s Gillingham Pier store for its spring green token scheme.

The store is setting aside £1,000 to share between the three charities, and customers will choose how the money is allocated.

Customers will be given tokens as they pass through the checkout, which they put in the box of the good cause they’d most like to support.

The charity with the most tokens will be awarded £500, with the other two receiving £250 each.

Buster’s Book Club will be one of the three chosen charities at Asda’s Gillingham Pier store between April and June.

The club encourages children to read more at home. Participating schools’ classes compete internally for weekly trophies, and winners of monthly inter-school challenges are rewarded with tickets to leisure attractions or visits by celebrity storytellers.

KM Charity Team literacy coordinator Kay Devine said: “This is such great news, and we’re so grateful to Asda for choosing us.

“A share of this money could make a real difference to young readers in Medway, helping more children access an initiative that has helped transform the literacy habits of so many pupils across the district.”
